Summary 2003
As far as comic books go, 2003 turned out to be a pretty good year for crime fiction. This was in part due to a rise in genre fiction as a whole, in part due to the growth of the small presses, and in part due to a combination of good marketing and fortuitous timing. Yet, as with all growth trends, this year produced a few dogs.
The average comic shop newby heads immediately for the “New Comics” section, because new is better, right? Veteran comic shop patrons head for the back issue bins, because they’re always on the lookout for that one issue that will complete a story, or a collection.
When most people think of comic books, they think of spandex-wearing superheroes. Villains wearing some kind of ridiculous outfit perpetrate most of the crimes committed in those books. There is very little examination of what happened, or why. These books focus mostly on costumes, powers, and super-human efforts.
