Derringer nominee

Congratulations to Rick Noetzel. His story “Joyride” is a nominee for the Short Mystery Fiction Society’s 2008 Derringer Award.

Congratulations to the other nominees as well, with special shout outs to Shred alums Patricia Abbott, Beverle Graves Myers, and Herschel Cozine.

DNS moved very quickly

So the website is back up in its new location. All the content should be in place. (Thanks go to my sweetie. Razzies go to WordPress. I’m normally a big fan, but it made a hash of the straightforward import/export.)

You can expect to see a new design in the nearish future. But not tonight.

Moving

Behind the scenes, we’re pulling up stakes and migrating the site and e-mail to a different server. This will result in some obvious downtime (the site will be inaccessible for a couple days). There is also an increased risk of e-mail bobbles, so until further notice Shred is closed to submissions.

Computer down

Just an FYI, the computer I typically use for Shred stuff—reading and editing stories, yes/no/maybe, upcoming schedule, payment tracking, etc.—has given up to ghost. The data may be recoverable, which would be convenient and save me a bit of time; if not, I’ll just spend some time digging through other records to recreate the missing info. Bobbles will, hopefully, be limited and not extend past this week.

Spinetingler Awards

Sandra Ruttan has released the short list for the Spinetingler Awards, and I am very pleased to announce that Gerri Leen’s “Shared Losses” is included in the short story short list.

Voting is open until December 30. Check out the short list and register your opinion (and, maybe, find something new and good to read).

Status update

I’ve now reviewed and responded to all submissions and queries received before August.

If you should have received such an e-mail but have not, please assume it has been eaten by the cyberspace gremlins and resend the story or a query. Please use one of the subject lines tags specified in the guidelines, to avoid having the e-mail eaten by my spam filter gremlins.

Call for seasonal stories

I have no objection to publishing seasonally-inappropriate stories (like, say, a blizzard-intensive story in July). It’s a shout-out to Shred’s readers down under. And I firmly believe a good story is a good story, regardless of when it’s published or read.

Having said that, in a couple months Holiday Season™ will be upon us.

Call for lawyer stories

My sister’s a graduate of SUNY Buffalo Law, and her birthday is August 27—which just happens to fall on a Monday this year. So as a birthday present to her, I’m looking for stories that center around lawyers.

That downtime right there? Scheduled.

If you tried to access the site this morning and couldn’t, rest assured it was scheduled downtime. The provider’s server move is now complete (otherwise you wouldn’t be able to read this post).
