Taking Van der Flieder’s Star

“In 1592, one hundred years after Columbus discovered the Americas, Johann Van der Flieder and sixty-one men landed on a small island off the coast of Maine. That was in the summer. Their ship left them with a supply of tools, food, weapons, and water. They spent the remainder of the summer building two longhouses to use as barracks, and a small command post for Van der Flieder and two officers along with a surgeon.

The Inspector

Like many bad days, this one was starting late. Gonzalo was scheduled to leave the station house and head home in fifteen minutes. His relief had already come in and Mari had called to say dinner was nearly done. Instead of finishing up his paperwork for the day, however, he was listening to someone on the phone, running his free hand through his hair and wishing he was one of those sheriffs who could leave well enough alone. Or at least that the deputy who was relieving him were more experienced and able to do things on his own rather than still learning the job.

Bio: Steven Torres

Among other things, I am the author of the Precinct Puerto Rico series for Thomas Dunne books. Book four in the series should come out in the Fall of 2006. I’ve had stories published in Shots, CrimeSpree and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine as well as a tiny journal of sports literature called Aethlon.
